"Little Dangerous Here"
Police sweep leads to 3 arrests, an over 25
impounded cars in Detroit
Police are cracking down on illegal drag racing on Detroit streets, with a sweep this
weekend that resulted in three arrests and 30 cars being impounded.
Two arrests were for multiple traffic infractions, the third was for a distribution of cocaine
charge out of Wisconsin, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, which conducted
the crackdown in a joint operation with the Detroit Police Department. Of the vehicles
impounded, three were racing vehicles, one of which was reported stolen.
Police also seized a gun and other weapons, mostly knives, and small amounts of
marijuana and other drugs, the Sheriff's Office said in a press release. The sweep was
conducted Friday night leading into Saturday morning near Epworth and Linsdale on the
city's west side.
Authorities are cracking down on illegal drag racing because of complaints of raucous
crowds and souped-up vehicles racing up and down neighborhood streets, the Sheriff's
Office said. In the past year, there have been serious accidents and altercations, shots fired
and several deaths, according to the release.
At one point during this weekend's crackdown, shots were fired in the vicinity of officers
closing in to end the activity. A 17-year-old girl was briefly detained to ensure her safety, the
Sheriff’s Office said.
